How We Score AI Tools
Every score on AI Tool Rank is the result of hands-on testing by our team. Here's exactly how we arrive at the numbers you see.
Score Dimensions
We evaluate each tool across four core dimensions, each rated on a scale of 1 to 10:
Ease of Use (1–10)
How quickly can a new user get productive? We measure onboarding friction, interface clarity, quality of documentation, and the learning curve required to reach a competent level of use. A 10 means anyone can get started in minutes; a 1 means even experienced users will struggle.
Value for Money (1–10)
Does the price match what you get? We look at the breadth of features relative to cost, how the tool compares against direct alternatives at the same price point, and whether free or lower tiers offer genuine utility. Generous free tiers and competitive pricing push this score higher.
Features (1–10)
How capable is the tool? We assess the depth of its feature set against typical use cases in its category — including API access, integrations, file handling, context window, model options, and specialised capabilities. More powerful, flexible tooling scores higher.
Support (1–10)
How well does the company support its users? We evaluate documentation quality, response time on support tickets, community resources, and the availability of live help channels. A 10 indicates enterprise-grade, responsive support; a 1 means you're largely on your own.
Overall Score
The overall score is the unweighted average of the four dimension scores, rounded to two decimal places:
Overall = (Ease of Use + Value for Money + Features + Support) / 4We deliberately do not weight dimensions differently because the right weighting is subjective and depends on your use case. The individual dimension scores let you apply your own priorities.
How Tools Are Tested
Every tool listed on AI Tool Rank has been tested hands-on by the AI Tool Rank team. Our testing process includes:
- Account creation: We sign up using a standard plan (free or entry-level paid) to experience the real onboarding flow.
- Task-based evaluation:We run a set of standardised tasks relevant to the tool's primary category to measure actual capability and ease of use.
- Pricing verification:We verify all pricing directly from the tool's official pricing page at the time of review.
- Support test: We submit a support request to measure response time and quality.
- Feature audit:We cross-check each feature flag against the tool's documentation and confirmed behaviour in testing.
We do not accept sponsored reviews or let vendors influence our scores. See our Affiliate Disclosure for full details on how we make money.
Update Frequency
AI tools evolve rapidly. To keep our data accurate:
- Scores are reviewed and updated quarterly (every three months). If a major product change happens between cycles, we update sooner.
- Pricing is verified and updated monthly because pricing changes more frequently than product quality.
- Feature flags are updated alongside pricing when we detect changes during our monthly pricing check.
Each tool page shows an updated_at date so you can see exactly when we last reviewed it.
